Billing Technician
Supervisor: Senior Accounting Manager.
Status: Non-exempt, full-time.
Number of Openings: 1
Wage: begins at $19.34, adjusted for experience, combined with an excellent benefits package.
Essential Duties:
- Use billing software specific to a variety of contract providers for HCFA 1500, 837 and 835 data uploading and downloading in contract provider’s software programs. (e.g., Streamline, SmartCare, Access, EZ Claims, Dynamics, etc.).
- Submit accurate and timely billing data using established procedures and timelines of funding sources (e.g., CMHs, commercial insurance, etc.) and ROI protocols.
- Perform necessary billing follow-up using established appeals processes and timelines.
- Accurately record all payments, adjustments and corrections.
- Maintain all appropriate documentation that supports billing.
- Consistently monitor and investigate denials, past due balances and re-billing and take the appropriate action (collection process, appeal, write off, etc.)
- Monitor payer portals for information, authorizations and EOBs, and contract rate adjustments, and update Authorization Specialist and Contract Compliance Manager in a timely manner to ensure accurate rates and authorizations are in place to allow seamless billing process
- Assist the Accounting Manager in the establishment of processes, and complete billing for third party insurances (Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Priority Health, etc.) as delegated.
- Maintain effective ongoing communication with funders and program management regarding claims and payments.
- Prepare reports on receivables as assigned.
- Assist the Reconciliation Specialist with the preparation of the monthly reconciliation of accounts receivable balances.
- Assist in necessary cross training of other Finance staff (as selected by the Accounting Manager.)

- Maintain the confidentiality of all restricted information, data and reports.
- Complete all other tasks as assigned by the Senior Accounting Manager or the CFO.
Paid training is provided to all new employees. During your first few weeks of employment, you will take a number of in-person classes, virtual classes over Zoom, and self-paced online courses. Trainings include (but are not limited to): People-Centered Planning, Diversity and Equity, and the legal rights and protections of Individuals Served. Trainings vary by position.
Requirements for Employment:
You must have an Associate Degree in business or accounting fields; OR High School Diploma/GED equivalent plus equivalent work experience required. Experience in commercial billing, EHR billing software, third party insurance billing, Medicaid, and behavioral health services preferred. Must have knowledge of general accounting principles and practices and the complete revenue cycle including receivables and denial management. Understanding of CPT codes, prior authorizations, EOBs, remittance advice, and insurance portals preferred. Demonstrated excellence in documentation, time management, and organizational skills required. Position requires the ability to: follow oral and written instructions; work independently, as well as in a team; manage own workflow; define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; and utilize modern office practices and procedures related to accounting, including: spreadsheet programs, accounting computer programs, e-mail programs and calculators.
